You may have noticed it yourself for a while now. Your skin feels a little drier, the first fine lines are starting to appear, or your face doesn't look quite as fresh as it used to. That's completely normal. As you get older, your skin changes. And that goes for men too. Many men spend years paying very little attention to their facial skincare routine. A quick wash in the shower, dry off, and you're done. But once you reach your forties, your skin could benefit from a little extra care. Fortunately, you really don't need a bathroom cabinet full of creams and serums to achieve that.

What happens to your skin after 40?

From around the age of 30, your body's collagen production gradually begins to decline. Collagen is a protein that helps keep your skin firm and gives it structure. As you get older, your skin slowly loses some of its elasticity. It also tends to retain moisture less effectively, and the natural process of skin renewal gradually slows down. You may notice these changes in several ways. Your skin might feel drier or tighter, fine lines become more visible, and your complexion may start to look a little duller. In men, these changes aren't always immediately noticeable. Men's skin is generally thicker and contains more collagen than women's skin. But men's skin isn't immune to the natural ageing process either.

Healthy Skin doesn't have to look young

Getting older is part of life, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with a few wrinkles. They give your face character and tell a little of your story. As far as I'm concerned, good skincare isn't about trying to look younger at all costs. It's about keeping your skin healthy, comfortable and well cared for. With the right skincare, dry, dull or blemish-prone skin can often improve noticeably. And you don't need to spend ages standing in front of the mirror every morning and evening to achieve that.

Cleansing is important, but don't overdo it

Your skin has to deal with quite a lot every day. Think of air pollution, sweat, excess oil and dirt that build up throughout the day. Washing your face daily with a gentle facial cleanser helps remove excess oil and impurities without unnecessarily drying out your skin. It's best to avoid regular soap or harsh cleansing products. These can damage your skin's natural protective barrier, leaving it feeling even drier or more sensitive. Regular shaving can also put extra stress on your skin. Proper aftershave care helps reduce irritation and that uncomfortable feeling of tightness.

Hydration makes a big difference

One of the most important changes as your skin ages is that it loses moisture more easily. This can make fine lines more noticeable and leave your skin feeling less supple. A good moisturising face cream helps your skin retain moisture and supports its natural protective barrier. Products containing ingredients such as hyaluronic acid can be particularly beneficial. Hyaluronic acid helps attract and retain moisture, making your skin appear plumper and smoother. And don't forget sun protection. UV radiation is one of the main causes of premature skin ageing. Using sunscreen with at least SPF 30 every day helps protect your skin, even when the sun isn't shining brightly.

What can a professional facial treatment do for your skin?

There's a lot you can do at home to keep your skin in good condition. However, a professional facial treatment can be a great addition to your skincare routine. At Body Care voor Mannen, I offer an extensive hydrating facial treatment specifically tailored to the characteristics of men's skin. During the treatment, your skin is thoroughly cleansed, and dead skin cells and any impurities are removed. Your skin then receives extra care with a facial mask, a collagen eye mask and a hydrating serum containing hyaluronic acid. The aim is to leave your skin clean, refreshed and deeply hydrated, feeling soft and well cared for again. And of course, a facial treatment is also simply a relaxing moment when you don't have to do anything at all.

Microneedling – extra care for ageing skin

Would you like to do something more about fine lines, loss of firmness or uneven skin texture? Then microneedling might be an interesting treatment to consider. Microneedling involves using a special pen to create tiny, controlled microchannels in the skin. This stimulates the skin's natural repair process, including collagen production. Over time, this treatment can help improve skin texture and reduce the appearance of fine lines, certain scars and other skin imperfections. Results develop gradually and vary from person to person. Sometimes several treatments are needed. Because microneedling is a more intensive treatment, we'll first assess whether it's suitable for your skin. Proper aftercare and sun protection are also important.

Your lifestyle plays a role too

Skincare products aren't the only things that influence how your skin looks. Your daily habits also play an important role. Getting enough sleep, eating a balanced and varied diet, avoiding smoking and protecting your skin from the sun all help keep your skin in good condition. Long-term stress and a lack of sleep can also make your skin look temporarily more tired. You don't need to completely change your lifestyle. Often, small changes can make a difference, especially when you stick with them consistently.

Start giving your skin the attention it deserves

Many men only start thinking about skincare when they notice their skin changing. But it's never too late to give your skin a little more attention. You don't need to look younger than you are. Having healthy, fresh-looking and well-cared-for skin is just as important. At Body Care voor Mannen in Amsterdam Oud-West, I'm happy to help you give your skin the care it needs. Whether you choose a hydrating facial treatment or would like to give your skin more intensive care with microneedling, we'll look together at what works best for your skin. Because taking good care of yourself doesn't stop when you turn 40. In fact, it might become even more important. Curious about what I can do for your skin?
