When to exercise after a massage?

Sporten na een massage: wanneer weer trainen? Vraag advies bij Body Care voor Mannen in Amsterdam.

You've just had a massage and feel relaxed. But what if you want to hit the gym later that day? Can you work out straight away, or is it better to postpone your training? That mainly depends on the intensity of the massage, the type of workout and how your muscles feel.

Can you exercise right after a massage?

After a gentle relaxation massage, you can usually return to your normal daily activities. Light exercise, such as walking or easy cycling, is generally fine too. Have you had a deep sports massage or trigger point massage? Your muscles may feel a little more sensitive for a while. A tough workout straight afterwards might therefore feel less comfortable. In that case, it's best to reduce the intensity of your workout or move it to another time.

How long should you wait before strength training?

There's no fixed rule saying you have to wait 24 or 48 hours after a massage before exercising again. What matters most is how your body responds. Do your muscles feel relaxed and comfortable, with no soreness or discomfort? Then you can generally return to your normal training routine. If your muscles feel tender after a deep massage, give them a little more time and wait until movement feels comfortable again before doing heavy strength training.

Massage on a training day or rest day?

If you work out regularly and want to book a deep massage, a rest day can be a good choice. You won't have to exercise intensely afterwards and can simply enjoy the treatment. Having a massage on a training day isn't necessarily a bad idea either. Just keep in mind how much stress you're putting on your muscles, especially if you're planning to train the same muscle groups intensely. Have an important competition or tough workout coming up? I'd personally avoid an intense massage shortly beforehand.

What if your muscles are already sore?

After strength training or an unusually demanding workout, you may experience muscle soreness. A gentle massage can feel pleasant and may sometimes temporarily reduce how sore your muscles feel. If your muscles are very sore, a deep massage might not be particularly comfortable. So let me know beforehand how your muscles are feeling. If you experience sudden sharp pain, noticeable swelling or suspect an injury, have it checked by a healthcare professional first.

What's the best time for you?

There's no perfect time that works for everyone. Some people prefer to schedule their massage on a rest day, while others like to come in after a week of training. Do you exercise regularly? Feel free to tell me when you usually work out and whether you have a tough training session or competition coming up. That way, we can take your activities into account and adjust the intensity of the massage accordingly.

My advice: try to schedule a deep massage when you don't need to perform at your best immediately afterwards. Most importantly, listen to how your body responds. That way, you can enjoy your massage without it getting in the way of your workout schedule.

Love,

Marc
