Ingrown hairs after shaving

Updated: Oct 6

You’ve shaved your body hair, and a few days later red bumps, itching, or small inflammations appear. You may even notice a hair trapped underneath the skin. Chances are you’re dealing with ingrown hairs. Ingrown hairs are quite common in men, especially in areas that are shaved or trimmed regularly. Think of the chest, stomach, back, armpits, pubic area, buttocks, and legs. It can be frustrating, because the whole point of shaving is to make your skin look smooth and well-groomed. Fortunately, by using the right shaving technique and giving your skin a little extra care, you can reduce the risk of irritation and ingrown hairs. But how does an ingrown hair actually develop? How can you recognize one? And what can you do yourself to keep your skin calm and well cared for?
What is an ingrown hair?
Normally, a hair grows from the hair follicle through the skin and outwards. With an ingrown hair, things happen a little differently. The hair grows back into the skin or becomes trapped underneath a thin layer of skin. Your skin may react to this. For example, a red or tender bump may develop. Sometimes you can clearly see the hair underneath the skin, while in other cases it may simply look like a small pimple. It is usually not serious, but it can be uncomfortable, sensitive, or cosmetically bothersome.
How can you recognize ingrown hairs?
Everyone’s skin reacts differently, but an ingrown hair can often be recognized by one or more of the following symptoms:
small red bumps
itching
a burning sensation
tender areas
small pimples
dark spots after inflammation
a hair visibly growing underneath the skin
When several hairs become ingrown at the same time, the skin can become quite irritated. This can be especially uncomfortable in areas that are shaved regularly or where clothing rubs against the skin.
Why do ingrown hairs develop after shaving?
When you shave, the hair is cut close to the surface of the skin. As the hair begins to grow back, it can sometimes curl back into the skin or remain trapped underneath a thin layer of skin. This happens more easily with thick, coarse, or curly body hair. However, the way you shave also plays an important role.
Shaving too closely
An extremely smooth result may feel great, but closer is not always better for your skin. The closer the hair is cut to the skin, the greater the chance that the short hair will become trapped underneath the skin as it grows back. Going over the same area several times with the razor can also make the skin more prone to irritation.
Shaving against the direction of hair growth
Shaving against the grain often gives an extra-smooth result, but it also cuts the hairs very short. As they begin to grow back, they may be more likely to curl or grow back into the skin. If you are prone to ingrown hairs, shaving in the direction of hair growth is usually gentler on your skin.
Using a blunt razor
With a blunt razor, you often need to go over the same area several times to remove the hair. This creates additional friction and can lead to irritation, red bumps, and unsettled skin. A clean, sharp razor really does make a difference.
Dead skin cells
Dead skin cells can also make it more difficult for a hair to grow out through the skin. If the opening of a hair follicle becomes blocked, the new hair may continue growing underneath the skin. That is why good skincare is just as important as your shaving technique.
What can you do to prevent ingrown hairs after shaving?
A few simple adjustments can help keep your skin much calmer and reduce the risk of ingrown hairs.
Prepare your skin properly
Avoid shaving dry skin if possible. Warm water helps soften the hairs. Taking a warm shower before shaving is therefore a good way to prepare your skin. When wet shaving, use enough shaving gel, shaving foam, or another suitable shaving product. This allows the razor to glide more easily across the skin and reduces friction.
Shave in the direction of hair growth
Take a good look at the direction in which your body hair grows and try to shave with the grain as much as possible. The result may feel slightly less ultra-smooth, but your skin will often thank you for it. Especially if you are prone to red bumps and ingrown hairs.
Do not press too hard
With a sharp razor, you hardly need to apply any pressure. Let the razor do the work. Pressing harder does not necessarily give you a better result and can actually cause more friction and irritation.
Avoid repeatedly shaving the same area
It can be tempting to go over the same patch of skin one more time because you can still see a hair there. However, it is better to limit this as much as possible. The more often you shave over the same area, the greater the chance of irritation.
Use clean and sharp equipment
A clean, sharp razor is not only more comfortable to shave with, but it is also gentler on your skin. If you use a trimmer, make sure to clean it thoroughly and regularly as well.
Give your skin some attention after shaving
Your skin may be slightly more sensitive after shaving. A mild, soothing lotion or cream can help your skin feel comfortable again. If you have sensitive skin, be careful with products that contain a lot of fragrance or alcohol. These may sting or cause additional irritation.
Exfoliate regularly, but gently
Gentle exfoliation helps remove excess dead skin cells. This gives new hairs more room to grow through the skin. More is not necessarily better. Scrubbing skin that is already red or irritated too aggressively can actually make the problem worse. So treat your skin with care.
Do you already have an ingrown hair?
It can be tempting to pick at it, squeeze it, or try to remove it with tweezers or a needle. However, it is better not to do this. Doing so can damage the skin and cause even more irritation. Instead, give the area some rest and temporarily avoid additional friction or shaving. If the ingrown hair is close to the surface, it may eventually work its way through the skin naturally. If the area becomes very painful or swollen, if there is significant redness or pus, or if you frequently suffer from inflammation, it is a good idea to have it checked by your doctor.
